Why Talk Therapy Isn't Always Enough: What Breathwork Can Access That Words Can't

  • Kyla Gagnon

Talk therapy helps us understand our stories. Breathwork helps us finally release what those stories never let go of.

Breathwork Can Access What Talk Therapy Can Not

Last weekend, I had the privilege of co-hosting one of my favorite ceremonies alongside my dear friend Shannon founder of Golden Heart Cacao. Together we bring people through an experience that combines a cacao , microdosing with psilocybin, conscious connected breathwork, and Reiki through a stunning ( in my humble opinion and through feedback from over 100 humans at this point) ceremonial experience.

We've offered this ceremony over 10 times now, and every single gathering reminds me why I do this work.

This particular ceremony however, left me reflecting on something that feels deeply important.

While breathwork has become incredibly popular over the past few years ( this will be another conversation.... I have MANY big full feelings about this ) mannnnnnny people still don't truly understand what it can access, or why it can be so profoundly different from simply talking about our experiences, or doing some box breathing here and there.

There Are Places Words Can't Reach

One of the women attending the ceremony was a therapist who has spent her 30+ year career working with trauma, emotional healing, and the human psyche.

During our sharing circle afterward, she said something that hit me RIGHT in the truth space... gave me the goose pimples... truth shivers you know?!

She shared that although she deeply believes in talk therapy, there were emotions she accessed during breathwork that she had never been able to reach through years of talking.

Resentment.

Anger.

Layers of emotional energy she knew existed, but couldn't fully touch through conversation alone~ funny actually she said "I brought this to MY therapist this week.... the desire to go into my anger and resentment .... to which she said we'll start looking at that next session" ~ clearly her body had other plans.... lol we will be looking at this NOW thank you very much

She wasn't criticizing therapy. She was simply acknowledging its limitations.

Talk therapy is incredibly valuable. It helps us understand ourselves, organize our experiences, and make meaning of our lives.

But it also keeps us thinking.... very heady.....

We're analyzing.

Explaining.

Finding the right words.

Making sense of things.

Remaining interwoven with our masculine essence, our masculine energy rather than our feminine essence. ( thinking / doing vs feeling / being to be realllllly simplified)

Breathwork invites something entirely different.

It allows us to step out of analysis and into direct experience. ( out of mind and into body )

Instead of thinking about what happened, we begin to feel what our bodies have been carrying all along.

Your Body Holds Experiences Your Mind Can't Explain

Many of our deepest emotional patterns formed long before we had language ~ some came with us through our lineage.

Our nervous systems begin developing in utero, constantly receiving information through our mother's nervous system.

Then come our earliest years of life.

Before we could explain what was happening...
Before we had vocabulary...
Before we could tell someone we felt scared, abandoned, unseen, or overwhelmed...

Our bodies were already recording every experience.

Those memories don't live as stories.

They live as sensation.

As tension.

As protective patterns.

As felt experience.

Which means we can't always talk our way out of something that was never stored in words to begin with.

This is why so many people understand exactly why they feel the way they do... yet still don't feel different.

Insight isn't always enough.

Sometimes the body needs an opportunity to finish what it never got to complete - this is trauma work, this is breathwork, this is evolution and growth.... this is HEALING

We Often Don't Realize How Much We're Carrying

Another woman at the ceremony had a completely different experience.

For most of the session she was smiling, laughing, moving freely, and fully enjoying herself.

Then something shifted.

The laughter softened.

The tears came.

When we gathered afterward, she smiled through watery eyes and said,

"Well... that was 52 years of holding everything in. It's just... out."

You could literally see the lightness in her.

Not because every problem in her life had disappeared.

But because her body no longer had to spend so much energy carrying what had been trapped there for decades.

What struck me most was that I don't think she even realized how much she had been holding.

And honestly?

Most of us don't.

"I'm Not Stressed"

For years I used to tell everyone that I wasn't stressed.

Massage therapists would ask.

My naturopath would ask.

Friends would ask.

I'd confidently answer,

"No, I'm good."

Meanwhile, I was running a business with no boundaries around client support, overworking, training constantly, navigating grief I wasn't allowing myself to feel, living with very few boundaries, and carrying years of unprocessed emotion.

Looking back, I was incredibly stressed.... LIKE THE MOSSSSST stressed

I had simply adapted, STRESS ADAPTATION - we normalize levels of stress and eventually we DON’T NOTICE or recognize it as “stress” it’s just “normal”

That's what our nervous systems do.

They normalize whatever they're repeatedly exposed to.

Eventually our baseline becomes tension.

Our baseline becomes busyness.

Our baseline becomes carrying.

Until we no longer recognize it.

We assume this is just who we are.

But our bodies keep the score - YES there's a book with this title - I highly suggest it

Stress that remains unresolved doesn't simply disappear.

It often shows up later as exhaustion, anxiety, chronic tension, emotional overwhelm, illness, or the quiet feeling that something just isn't right.

Breathwork Creates Space

One of my favorite things about conscious connected breathwork is that it doesn't ask you to force healing. ( again sooooo much to say about this in the previously mentioned convo about breathwork becoming TRENDY + popular)

It doesn't require you to relive every memory or explain every emotion.

Instead, it creates enough safety for the body to begin letting go of what it's been carrying.

Sometimes that's tears.

Sometimes it's laughter.

Sometimes it's anger.

Sometimes it's peace.

Sometimes it's simply a deep breath that feels fuller than you've taken in years.

Every experience is different because every body has its own wisdom.

Why I Created THE Breath studio

This work is exactly why I created THE Breath studio.

My hope has never been to help people become "better." - I honestly think we're all quite fabulous

It's been to help them remember what they feel like without years of accumulated stress, protection, and emotional weight clouding who they truly are.

Inside THE Breath studio, we breathe together twice each month through guided conscious connected breathwork ceremonies.

We explore themes for coaching and masterminding that help us reconnect with ourselves.

We create space for the body to soften.

For emotions to move.

For old stories to loosen their grip.

For people to feel more present in their lives.

Because when we're no longer spending all of our energy carrying the past...

We have so much more capacity for the present.

And maybe that's what healing really is.

Not becoming someone new.

Simply becoming free enough to fully be yourself again.
