The Wild Woman Archetype: Reclaiming Your Instinct, Trust, and Inner Authority

  • Kyla Gagnon

What does it mean to reclaim your wild woman? This reflection explores instinct, boundaries, and nervous system regulation — and how to return to your natural inner authority.

There are five female archetypes I want to be bringing in. There are many more, and these five are really alive for me right now. This is a little bit of a dip your toes in, an opening of curiosity within you to what these archetypes represent and what it might look like to start playing with them.

If we think back in time, way back in time when humans were connected to their most natural essence, their most natural way of being — connected to nature, connected to community, connected to the cycles of the moon, to the cycles of their body — life was simpler.

The most regulated woman is a woman who is connected to her natural essence, her natural instinct, her natural ways of being. She is instinctual. She is intuitive. She is enough. She is all of it. She doesn’t need to seek externally for anything.

And we have moved as a society so far from that.

We are so far removed from our natural wildness.

The Wild Woman Is Deeply Connected to Her Instincts

The wild woman is very, very deeply connected to her instincts, like an animal. She steps on a twig and all senses come alive.

The wild woman archetype is the woman who hears the twig snap in the forest and already knows whether to stay, to move, or to prepare the arrow. Her instincts are so in tune.

The wild woman is not chaos.
She is not unruly.
She is self-trusting above and before anything else.

She is untamed, and her inner authority, her inner knowing, is unwavering.

Even hearing that perks something up inside of you. It perks something up inside of me — that feeling of:

That feels familiar.
I want that back.
How do I get that back?

There is a remembrance.

The Modern Woman Has Been Trained Away From Her Instinct

As modern-day women, we are highly overstimulated.
We are over obligated.
We say yes to everything.

Over decades and centuries and lifetimes, we have been subtly trained away from our instinct.
Subtly trained away from our self-knowing.
Subtly trained away from that unwavering connection to our inner wisdom.

The wild woman is what becomes awakened in us when approval is no longer our guiding light.

We are no longer seeking outside validation.
We are no longer looking around for permission.

The sense of urgency and panic begins to soften.
Our instincts become louder than societal or familial conditioning.

When that inner voice says:

"I don’t think that’s right."

And we start to question what we’ve always been told —
our wild woman is coming online.

The Wild Woman and Boundaries

When we are working with the wild woman archetype, we begin cleaning up our boundaries.

We start remembering how to listen to the messages from our body.
We become crystal clear and honest with our energy and our feelings.

If someone asks you to do something and your inner feeling is a hard no, you don’t need to validate it.

When you start listening to that hard no, the wild woman is coming online.

We’ve all heard it:

No is a complete sentence.

And it really is.

The wild woman archetype lives by that truth.

But this isn’t about being extreme.
It isn’t about being careless or thoughtless.
It isn’t about being off the rails.

The wild woman is steady.
She is rooted.
She is deeply confident in herself.

She is so connected to nature and to herself — because she is nature — that you simply cannot shake her.

Her essence is wild.
She is regulated.
She is whole.

Signs You Are Disconnected From Your Wild Woman

When the wild woman is far from us, the modern woman often:

Second-guesses herself
Follows the mind instead of instinct
Abandons her desires
Says yes when the body says no

Think of all the times you have abandoned your own wants or desires just to make things easier for everyone else.

Maybe you wanted one thing, but you went along with what everyone else wanted.
Maybe you agreed to something you didn’t actually want to do.
Maybe you said yes when inside you felt a clear no.

We have all been there.

And every time that happens, we move a little further away from our wild woman.

A Question to Ask Yourself

Where in your life are you already knowing the thing —
and still delaying the action?

You know what the right next step is.
You know what you want.
You know what needs to happen.

And you’re still not doing it.

Your instincts know the right thing.
But your mind, your stories, and your excuses are overruling them.

Take a little time with that.

A Simple Practice to Awaken the Wild Woman

Here is a really easy, really basic practice that we can all start doing to play with welcoming in the wild woman archetype.

First thing in the morning:

Before you touch your phone
Before you speak to a human or a pet

Step outside with your bare feet.

Ideally stand on dirt, grass, or sand.

Give yourself three minutes.

Close your eyes if that feels good.

And ask yourself:

What do I need to remember?
What is for me?
What am I forgetting?

The Wild Woman in Moments of Trigger

Another way the wild woman shows up is during moments of activation.

Maybe historically you reacted quickly.
Maybe you escalated situations without meaning to.

Working with the wild woman archetype means learning to pause.

Let the activation rise.
Let your body feel the emotion.
But don’t react immediately.

You can feel the trigger.
You can feel the heat in your body.
You can feel the mind preparing to defend.

And still remain rooted.

That is wild woman power.

You are not here to fight.
You are here to know yourself.
To trust your instincts.
To stand in your truth with grace.

Building Capacity to Hold Your Own Activation

We live in a world that is highly overstimulating.

Because of that, many of us live mostly in our minds and feel disconnected from our bodies.

The work is learning to feel again.

To feel activation without needing to immediately change it.
To know:

I am okay right now.
I can hold this.
I am all I need right now.

As your capacity to hold your own activation grows:

Your confidence rises
Your nervous system strengthens
Your presence becomes more grounded

You become a pillar — a safer space for those around you.

You become the root.

The Invitation

Each of us carries these archetypes within us.

We are everything.
We are all of her.
She is all of us.

We can show up exactly as we are and embody each of these archetypes, no matter who we are, no matter what we look like, and no matter what is happening in our lives.

The world right now needs more women reconnecting to their instinct, their truth, and their inner authority.

The world needs more wild women.
